Sephora Return and Buy Again Makeover
Editor's note: This commodity has been updated to reflect a response from Sephora.
Sephora's generous return policy is one of the reasons I continue to shop at that place. An expensive serum breaks me out? Return. Lipstick that fades subsequently an hour? I return that, besides.
According to its website, Sephora allows you to return any product that was purchased within lx days, even if information technology'south gently used, for full credit. There are unlike rules depending on whether you bought your items in-shop or online. Either way, spending $lx on a moisturizer you end up hating doesn't feel like a difficult hit to your wallet when you tin can always render information technology.
Nosotros know that heading into the store to get a sample before purchasing a product is ideal. Just, let'south face it—fourth dimension, location, and laziness are reasons why we usually end upward ordering online. Because of this mindset, most people cease up returning products that are the incorrect shade or weren't as pigmented as they thought they'd be.
Even so, the products you return have to go somewhere. When asked what happens to those returned products, Sephora told usa:
We also spoke with Sephora employee and consulted an in-depth Reddit thread to observe out what happens with returns.
This lengthy Reddit thread from 2014 asks, What does Sephora do with returned products that have been used? It features comments from former and current Sephora employees, and luckily, they shared their experiences with the return process.
An associate from a Sephora inside a JCPenney said products that are returned unused go back on the shelf. If a product is lightly used, it tin't exist resold. "The corporeality of Naked palettes I've had to throw in the dumpster considering I single shadow had been swatched just once is then incredibly depressing," the Redditor commented.

It's important to note that policies seem to vary by shop—or by when the individual was employed by Sephora. Another user explained that in their experience, unused products get thrown out. "Even if someone says they didn't utilize it, we can't put it back on the shelf. That's how my shop was, anyhow," wrote bluesky747.
Sources take claimed that some products are used as testers, which would make sense, only this is a policy that may also vary by store. Co-ordinate to bluesky747, their Sephora location didn't implement that. "We can't use returned products as testers considering their SKU has already been registered every bit bought/then returned," they wrote.
HelloGiggles spoke with an bearding source who works for a Sephora within JCP about the returns procedure. While careful to note that the policy may be dissimilar in freestanding stores, they said, "In our store, our return policy has inverse. At present nosotros take to take the actual receipt. No receipt, no return. No exceptions." (Unless the customer has the production on their Sephora Beauty Insider account.)
"We have a very strong step-past-footstep process and nosotros e'er have somebody by our side watching our moves," shared our source, going on to explain the process of taping the return sideslip to the product and placing information technology into a liquidation bin earlier inputting the product into the computer for replenishment. The next stride, bringing the products to the stock room, is highly supervised to an "abrasive" extent, but the hovering is for good reason—"other stores were caught stealing their returns."
"For us to take it to the back and walk the floor with it, we have to be escorted by a manager or security," our source explained, where they so separate the products into combustible or nonflammable hazard bins. The employee also has to fill out paperwork with their proper identification and details of the return.
Throwing away returned products—while wasteful—is often the nigh sanitary move. Tossing returned merchandise is protocol, even outside of the beauty industry. Yet, some companies, like Burberry, H&M, and Nike, practice this to encourage product scarcity, rather than to promote cleanliness. (Recent pushback against this practice prompted Burberry to terminate destroying its own products.)

Until the cosmetics manufacture figures out a style to reduce waste, there's another, sometimes illegal, way that thrown-out products are existence recycled. Once your former lipstick or unused palette hits the dumpster, information technology might get picked upward by someone else. Dumpster divers, as they're called, target the trash receptacles behind stores and choice out new and lightly used goods. Many are even so in their original packaging.
While dumpster-diving stores similar Ulta often results in incredible hauls, finding treasures in the trash at Sephora isn't as easy. When Sephora throws out products, they are often purposely damaged prior to going into the trash. Sometimes they're sent back to the manufacturer, or thrown into trash compactors. "The but things y'all'll e'er detect in Sephora's trash are cardboard boxes, plastic, chimera wrap, actual trash…and fifty-fifty that has to be thrown out in articulate bags and then managers can check and brand sure there isn't whatsoever product in there to be found," wrote theworldexplodes in a comment on Reddit.
Until the manufacture figures out a style to best recycle returned products, some of the best ways to eliminate waste are to sample products when you tin can, and give lightly used products to friends (when in that location's no risk of spreading an infection). I know I would pay a small fee to buy samples online from the retailer. Sephora, are you listening?
Oh, and if yous're a serial product returner, Sephora is definitely tracking you. "Sephora monitors render activeness for corruption and reserves the correct to limit returns or exchanges at Sephora and Sephora inside JCPenney in all instances," reads the Sephora website.
Now that you lot accept all of this info, it seems that purchasing items in-store is the way to go. Y'all can swatch, examination, sample, and figure out what products volition work best for y'all without the hassle of a return.
